ITR Refund Status Guide

How to check your income tax refund status step by step.

Go to the official Income Tax e-Filing portal.

Use your PAN as User ID and authenticate with password or Aadhaar OTP.

Go to "e-File" → "Income Tax Returns" → "View Filed Returns".

Look for: "Refund Issued" / "Processed" / "Under Processing" / "Defective".

Refunds are typically processed within 4-5 weeks after e-verification. If you filed and verified promptly, expect the refund within 30-45 days.

Common Reasons for Delay

Bank account not pre-validated on the IT portal

Mismatch between name on PAN and bank account

ITR not e-verified (30-day verification window missed)

Defective return notice issued (needs correction and re-filing)

Tax demand raised after processing (refund adjusted against demand)
